Having finally been frogmarched to the supposed promised land of a majority independent board – the first of its kind for a sporting code in South Africa – the question that arose from the annual general meeting that ratified the move was how hard Cricket SA (CSA) would fight for its own landmark governance structure.
To recap, it took Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa’s appointment of an independent board to strongly “encourage” a reluctant CSA to adopt the new dispensation, which was recommended eight years ago by Judge Chris Nicholson in the wake of the organisation’s bonuses scandal.
