One of South Africa's long-running soapies, 7de Laan, is set to resume production on Thursday after its finances were sorted out. The popular Afrikaans show suspended production for three days this week after the SABC had reportedly failed to make a payment.

The show's publicist, Kayleen Bessit, told City Press on Wednesday that the production and the public broadcaster had reached an agreement on Tuesday.

After further engagement with the SABC regarding outstanding payments, Danie Odendaal Productions is pleased to announce that although the full amount owed has not yet been settled, there are now sufficient funds to resume production.

She added: "Production will recommence on Thursday, September 7. The cast and crew are committed to delivering the high-quality content our fans and viewers deserve."

The communication to stop production was sent to staff members via WhatsApp on Sunday. It read:

This letter serves to inform you that management has made a decision to suspend the normal 7de Laan operations with immediate effect due to insufficient funds to maintain salaries and other operational requirements.

The actors and crew members were also told that the principle of "no work no pay" still applied as per their contract conditions.

Former 7de Laan actor director Denver Vraagom took to Facebook to vent his frustration.  “And there you have it, via WhatsApp on a Sunday morning. Time for Ingrid Paulus and myself to move on. The disrespect, the way it’s done."

In July, the soapie was cancelled after airing for 23 years. The last episode will be broadcast on December 26 2023.
