It’s quite wild how a simple video can change the trajectory of your life. For Lungelihle Zwane, affectionately known as Uncle Waffles, a viral video of her dancing and DJing in 2021 has changed her life and it seems the Tanzania hitmaker hasn’t looked back since.

Her success following the viral video where she can be seen dancing along to the popular song Adiwele by artists Young Stunna and Kabza De Small during her own DJ set has been monumental. For most people who become overnight viral sensations, the pressure to keep the momentum going usually makes for quite an underwhelming and short-lived career.

Waffles, on the other hand, has been able to take the success of a simple video, expand her fanbase and now she is securing a platform that is seeing her push the boundaries of South African music and make history in the industry, all while looking effortlessly stunning.

Sound the alarms because Waffles has hit another milestone after her performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in the US on Saturday. Held in California, Coachella has become one of the biggest festivals in the world, with acts such as Beyoncé and Tyler the Creator gracing the stage in their musical lifetimes.

In an interview with Billboard in March this year, Zwane shared her thoughts on her Coachella set, following a short US tour that she did last year and a few dates that would follow her Coachella performance. She said:

“It feels so surreal as someone who just started this whole journey.”

South Africa seems to have given the artist its stamp of approval as well, as tweets and pictures have been pouring in, giving Waffles all her flowers and praising her for staying true to her South African roots with authentically South African music.

This year, Waffles was joined by fellow South African techno DJ Kyle Watson, who has also been making big moves in his genre. Waffles also followed in the footsteps of other South African DJs, such as DBN Gogo, who graced the Coachella stage in 2022, and Major League DJz who performed the same year.
