The first red flag was probably the invisibility of media at the 2024 Soweto Tourism Awards held at the Soweto Theatre on 1 February. Just last year, a tourism strategy meeting held by the tourism industry hailed Soweto as the country's leading township in the influx of international tourists, in addition to accounting for 20% of South Africa’s tourism economy.
