VOICES

Having had the privilege of being one of the active participants in crafting the democratic SA Constitution in the Constitutional Assembly (CA) between 1994 and 1996, and having been tasked together with Max Coleman by the ANC of Nelson Mandela, to research and present the 18 Universally Accepted Principles of Human Rights, to the Bill of Rights: Theme Committee 4 of the CA, I have decided in this 2024 Human Rights Month to briefly reflect by few simple examples, on what did we mean, by summarising the Constitution into 3 broad areas, namely, The Right to be One; The Right to be Same; and The Right to be Different.

This is an acknowledgement of the burning desire and declaration to build an inclusive or common nationhood - "South Africa belongs to all who live in it, united in our diversity" as per the Preamble of the SA Constitution, and further acknowledges the complex make-up of the country's citizenry.
