Parents send their children to school and hope that teachers will act as their proxies when it comes to ensuring the children’s safety.

A Free State educator has allegedly violated that trust by raping one of his male teenage pupils.

It is the state’s case that the alleged rape happened at the teacher’s house.

“The teacher at Hentie Cilliers High School met the 17-year-old matric student in town at a butchery and invited him to his house. When they arrived at his house, the teacher raped the student.

“The incident was reported to the authorities after the student refused to attend school as his parents sought help.”

The Virginia Magistrates’ Court granted the teacher (28) bail of R3000 after his bail was not opposed.

The National Prosecuting Authority’s Mojalefa Senokoatsane says strict bail conditions were put in place.

“The bail was granted with conditions that he should not contact the victim and not enter Hentie Cilliers High School,” he says.

The case has been remanded to 21 May 2024.

In a separate case, Walter Sibusiso Mazibuko (36) has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of a seven-year-old girl.

Walter pleaded guilty.

The Volkrust Regional Court, in Mpumalanga, heard that on 18 March 2015, the victim was on her way home from school with her friend when she came across the accused in Volkrust dongas. The accused took the victim's shoe threw it into the river stream and ordered the victim to fetch it back. He then followed the victim and raped her. The victim was found by a passer-by who informed her family.

“The matter was reported to the police and the accused was linked to the offence through DNA.”

Prosecutor Thomo Mmabatho told the court that the victim's life changed drastically and that she is even experiencing seizures after the ordeal.

The court found no compelling and substantial circumstances to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence of life.

He was declared unfit to work with children and was further declared the accused unfit to possess a firearm in terms of Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000.
