Pretoria - A "palatial mega mansion" in Pretoria valued at an estimated R65m is set to go under the hammer next month.
According to Stonehenge Auctions, the Italian-inspired mansion in Laudium features over 2 500 square metres of living space, including a two-storey foyer with sweeping staircase, double volume living and dining rooms, 20-seat home theatre, indoor swimming pool, gym, massage room, billiards room and a 50-person gazebo. The mansion has six bedrooms and four double garages, and also features a guardhouse and a gatehouse. A prayer room has a dome shaped like those found in Mecca.
The Star reported on Thursday that it is one of Tshwane's, or even the country's, most luxurious houses, and has been dubbed "The Palace".
It features on homesoftherich.net, along with insurance magnet Douw Steyn's Palazzo Steyn in Midrand, which has an estimated value of R250m.
The owners, who had the mansion built 12 years ago, have decided to downscale because their four children have left home and married.
It will go under the hammer on 25 March. Some of the furniture, including a 24-seat dining room table, is also being sold because it was custom-made and won't fit into the owners' new house.
