Cape Town - Airports Company South Africa, Cape Town International Airport opened a new e-learning and resource Centre at the Hoofweg Primary School, Wesbank, Delft.
This is in partnership with AfriSam and the Department of Education, Western Cape.
Airports Company South Africa contributed R1.8m towards the building and equipping the facility with computers and educational material.
The total value of the building came to more than R5m. The Centre will not only be for leaners at Hoofweg Primary School it is accessible to learners around the Wesbank area. It is estimated that more than 4 000 learners have the privilege to use the facility for educational purposes.
The centre is also giving opportunities to the community of Wesbank. It has already started Adult ICT classes where they teach adults who are not working how to use computers.
The airport has taken a conscious decision to allocate funds for the improvement of learning and development in disadvantaged communities in the airport’s vicinity.
“Our business is not only about airports - it's about giving back to our communities. So, as an airport operator, contributing toward the development and sustainability of our communities is very important and education is the foundation for the development of any community”, said Deborah Francis, acting communications manager at Cape Town International Airport.
“On a daily basis we facilitate the movement of people to various destinations, and our neighbours are not in a position to experience the same. With this initiative, we are able to bring the world to them by simply clicking a button.”
