Emergency Eskom meeting, stage 2 initiated

Cape Town – Eskom has initiated stage 2 load shedding after an earlier warning about a severely constrained power system and stage 1 load shedding.

The Eskom media desk told Fin24 that Eskom management is currently in an emergency meeting and could not say why there is a need for a higher drop in power.

According to the Eskom load shedding [schedule] website stage 2 is initiated “in some areas due to high demand or urgent maintenance being performed at certain power stations”.

Eskom has confirmed that stage 2 load shedding will continue until 22:00.

Earlier on Monday Eskom notified the public of stage 1 load shedding between 11:00 and 22:00.

"Stage one allows for up to 1000MW of the national load to be shed, stage two for up to 2000MW, and stage three for up to 4000MW," the website advises.

"Load shedding will be implemented in most instances in 2 hour blocks (with an additional 30 minutes for switching between blocks) during the period 05:00 to 21:30. You therefore may be without electricity for 2,5 hours."

Eskom has called on consumers to switch off geysers, air conditioners, pool pumps and all non-essential appliances throughout the day to reduce electricity demand.

Commercial customers, particularly shopping centres, have been asked to switch off non-essential lights and to not to leave office equipment such as photocopiers and computers in standby mode after hours.

Eskom customers can also contact the customer call centre at 0860 037 566 for further information. Municipal customers are urged to contact their local authorities.
