Eskom: Weekend load shedding unlikely

Johannesburg - Scheduled blackouts are unlikely to happen on Friday and the weekend, Eskom said.

"Our aspiration is not to have load shedding today and the weekend," spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe said.

"We are doing everything possible to avoid having to implement load shedding."

He said the electricity situation remained the same as earlier this week.

Support from customers and the fact that some generators are back online curbed power cuts this week, Phasiwe said.

The power utility issued a load shedding alert in a tweet early on Friday, saying there was a medium to high probability of power cuts as the system was constrained and vulnerable.

In a notice on its Facebook page issued just after 06:00, it said: "Eskom will communicate later today whether #load_shedding will be implemented over the weekend. We appreciate your assistance in using electricity sparingly."
