Eurozone unemployment stuck at 11.5%

Luxembourg - Unemployment in the eurozone remained unchanged at 11.5% for a fourth consecutive month in September, according to data released on Friday, despite efforts to bring the figure down.

The 18-country currency bloc has pulled out of recession, but has struggled to make a significant dent in unemployment since it reached a record 12% last year.

An estimated 18.3 million people were out of work in the eurozone in September, according to the European Union's statistics agency, Eurostat. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was in line with analysts' expectations.

In the 28-member EU, the rate also remained static, at 10.1% unemployed people.

Youth unemployment has been of particular concern. There was little change to the figures in September, when 3.3 million people under the age of 25 were out of work in the eurozone and just under 5 million in the EU.

Youth unemployment remained highest in Spain and Greece, at more than 50%. The two countries also continued to post the highest overall unemployment rates, at around 25%.

The lowest unemployment rates, on the other hand, were in Germany and Austria, at 5% overall, and around 8% for youths.
