Cape Town - Wage negotiations between the SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) and the national municipal body, Salga, face a collapse following a disagreement over a new performance-based system.
Samwu general secretary Walter Theledi told Fin24 in his view Salga was negotiating in bad faith.
"Now that we are talking about salary increases Salga cannot introduce new issues when we are in the third round of negotiations," he said.
Theledi was referring to Salga's approach whereby it planned to link salary negotiations with a "new" performance-based system.
"They just want to impose without discussion...the performance-based system needs to be discussed because every municipality has its own system.
"If Salga wants to implement a system for the sector we must sit-down [for talks]," he said.
Salga is currently in a meeting to discuss Samwu's rejection of the performance-based system.
Salga could not be reached for comment.
