Mbombela - The commission on restitution of land rights in Mpumalanga has successfully started to respond to the call to fast-track land claims.
This comes after Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform Gugile Nkwinti's announcement that the land reform process has been re-opened for those who did not make the 31 December 1998 cut-off date.
"There are two lodge sites in the province situated in Emalahleni and Mbombela that are fully operational. The third identified site is in its final stages and will soon be open to the public for the process," said regional commission spokesperson Zithini Dlamini.
She said the new deadline to lodge land claims was 30 June 2019 for those who were dispossessed of their property after 19 June 1913 and it was estimated that at least 3.5 million people were forcibly removed from their land as a result of colonialism and racially discriminatory laws or practices implemented after June 1913.
Dlamini warned against fraudulent claims.
"The community must be aware that it is illegal to submit a fraudulent claim, including not disclosing other potentially interested parties. It is also illegal for a person to prevent or obstruct another from lodging a claim," Dlamini said.
