Pretoria - The City of Tshwane is considering selling a portion of the Groenkloof Farm in a bid to boost the local economy and create about 400 jobs, the city's council heard on Thursday.
The 2 9699 hectare property, which belongs to the municipality, is valued at R30m.
A request has been made by the Circle of Friends Bowling Club, who has a long-term lease on a portion of the property, to use the rest of the property as a commercial development.
The City did not oppose this.
Community Safety Member of Municipal Council Terrence Mashego said the proposed development would be good for the city and its economy.
"Not only will temporary jobs emanate from this process, [but] it will also contribute 400 permanent jobs. It will also attract investment to the area," he said.
Some of the conditions attached to buying the property would be taking on the costs of rebuilding the current bowling club and a proposed monthly rental fee of R250 000.
Although a developer had been earmarked to develop the area, by those who brought the proposal forward, the city would have to open up the tender to the public to ensure a fair process was undertaken.
Discussions were continuing.
