Cape Town - South African brand Mobicel has launched a range of products that offer functionality at a lower cost.
The company launched a R999 dual-SIM entry-level tablet dubbed the 'Cherry' that has a 17.8cm (7 inch) display, 5 megapixel main and selfie camera, as well as 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity.
But the company has faced some challenges as a manufacturer of dual SIM devices. Major South African networks take a dim view of the devices which allow consumers to easily switch between providers.
Mobicel though, said that it stands by its dual-SIM tablets.
"Sometimes one network might offer better data rates while another offers better calling rates, so the dual SIM gives you more room for flexibility. Now you can have a data and a voice SIM, and you can choose what works better for you. It's definitely a big advantage," said CEO Ridhwan Khan.
The company also launched a quad core powered R1 999 tablet called the Echo which has a 25.4cm (10 inch) display. It also has a keyboard and flip cover in the box. The Cherry has a flip cover as standard.
Like the premium manufacturers Apple, Samsung, Sony and LG, Mobicel has also launched a smart wearable fitness bracelet that monitors exercise, and delivers notifications. This bracelet costs R599.
"If your phone's not in your pocket or in your hands, you're still connected through the alerts you get on your fitness bracelet," Khan said.
