The full statement by Marcel Golding and John Copelyn

Comment just in from Fin24 user Dietlof Maré, CEO Fordt Knox Risk Consultancy Services:

The general public are rarely afforded a glimpse into the modus operandi of big business and elements within state and it is alarming though not surprising to see just how much moral degradation has actually taken effect.

Neither the media nor the state have the least bit of credibility and both are equally incompetent to further within their own spheres any advance towards a better future for the coming generations of this amazing country - Our South Africa. And we its citizens are not entirely without blame. Directing our efforts of mass action toward and for vain reasons with the same motive as inspires the very corrupt officials we protest against. At other times sitting snug and passively as long as it is not our children who are murdered or our property that is stolen.

The notion that a man might and should and could find joy for himself under the sun while there is even a single fellow who suffers not only poverty financially but also morally has crept into the minds of men and presented itself as an angel of light to the extent that all men would with the most singular purpose in the history of man arrest joy with all the violence they could muster if they perceived that it was their last chance to attain it. Is it not hypocritical for a thief to scream murder or a liar to claim injustice. We would venture to fix the world while the harder work - that of recognising our own part in it is ever abandoned.

Alas, the dogs have eaten their leader.

Copelyn statement: In our view Marcel created a lot of mistrust between himself and HCI by trading in these shares without our knowledge or consent and this is the heart of our difficulties in relation to the matter.

30 Oct 2014

Copelyn statement: I want to make clear we accept Marcel's statement that there was no dishonest intention whatsoever on his part.

30 Oct 2014

Copelyn statement: Firstly I want to make clear Marcel offered immediately to make good any losses on these (Ellies) trades when we indicated no interest in being involved in such acquisition and we do not expect to suffer any loss thereby.

30 Oct 2014

Copelyn statement: HCI believes it has from the inception of this business been a prime protector of the political independence of this business and we always will be.

Copelyn statement: There are good things and bad things about a free media environment. It's importance is that it is a cornerstone of democracy. It is THE means by which the public come to know things people in power might not like them to know about and we accept HCI became fair game for media attention when this spat became public.

Golding looks set to not challenge HCI of e.tv and move on, says Matthew le Cordeur.

30 Oct 2014

Golding statement: The past 10 days have been challenging. My colleagues at HCI have won and I have lost and I will be leaving. My hope is that the legacy I have tried to build continues under the new leadership of the company.

30 Oct 2014

Golding statement: On the Ellies shares matter, I place it on record that I did not act dishonestly nor for personal gain and that I at all times acted in good faith in what I believed was the best interests of Sabido and it's open view hd platform. My record of the events relating to the Ellies transactions is set out in full under oath in the affidavit which I submitted to the labour court and I do not intend to go into further detail here.

30 Oct 2014

Golding statement: My greatest regret and sadness is that I leave behind these wonderful people, many of whom have given up other lucrative opportunities so that they could be part of the e.tv dream.

30 Oct 2014

The statements by Golding and Copelyn amount to a peace deal and the two will not speak to media further on the matter.

30 Oct 2014

Golding statement: To Johnny [Copelyn], I wish him well.

30 Oct 2014

Golding statement: I have lost the support of Sctwu and my colleagues in HCI and accept this. Trust, integrity and truth is what our media business is about.

Fin24 user Japie Lamprecht reckons when a Shaik is involved there are problems.

Yunis Shaik is the brother of convicted fraudster Schabir Shaik. Other brothers are Chippy and Mo Shaik.

30 Oct 2014

Copelyn: Neither Marcel or I will make further statements about the sad decline in our partnership.

30 Oct 2014

Copelyn: Marcel and I go a long way - we respect each other and I am proud of that history and bound to Marcel in business partnership.

30 Oct 2014

KZN academic Patrick Bond had much to say about why political influence at e.tv would be bad for press freedom.

30 Oct 2014

Copelyn: Freedom of press is cornerstone of democracy.

30 Oct 2014

Copelyn: We accept Golding's statement around his purchase of Ellies shares.

30 Oct 2014

Copelyn can't read statement - handed statement for someone else to read it.

30 Oct 2014

Copelyn: Been highly rewarding partnership with Marcel. I make no apologies for who I am and what HCI is.

30 Oct 2014

Copelyn: We don't see this as a breach of policy practice. We don't influence character of news.

30 Oct 2014

Copelyn: e.tv said they could not attend. Yunis said he had a feed for e.tv to use. He attempted to get hold of Bronwyn (she quit yesterday as e.tv COO) and Marcel, he sent sms to head of news.

30 Oct 2014

Copelyn: State had expectation around this arrangement to cover the opening of the De Hoop dam.

30 Oct 2014

Copelyn: Entered into contact with govt to cover infrastructure development by Golding. These included documents with independent editorial view - govt did not interfere with editorial angle.

30 Oct 2014

Copelyn: We are fiercely independent of state.

30 Oct 2014

Copelyn: On 23rd of March Yunis became an exec director of HCI, he closed his business and ended his contract with Sabido.

30 Oct 2014

Copelyn: Shaik's legal company hired by Sabido for R100 000 over going digital.

30 Oct 2014

Copelyn: Digital world is the future for e.tv and media business in general. A sensitive issue is that the gorilla in arena, DStv, does not agree with our stance on how to roll out to digital.

30 Oct 2014

Copelyn is getting emotional and went very quiet for a while.

30 Oct 2014

Copelyn: Political interference issue - this is the most sensitive and important issue. The issue is around opening of De Hoop dam. Shaik had sent an SMS to head of news to ask if it would headline the news. We have owned eNews for 17 years. I have never got involved with content of news. I have never intervened in editorial. I don't believe HCI has ever interfered with editorial freedom.
