Want an iPhone at a bargain price? Here's how

Cape Town - Few would argue that there is a more recognisable brand than the iPhone. The device is shown enough times on reality TV shows so that one could be forgiven for thinking that every housewife in Atlanta possesses one.

For South Africans though, the iPhone brand represents the Ferrari ideal while they may own a Toyota.

But for those who desire an iPhone at a lower price than is generally available from local retailers, help is at hand.

The Orange online store posted the availability of older model iPhones on its website on Thursday, starting at R4 430 for the 4S, up to R6 375 for the iPhone 5.

But there is a catch: The phones are not new. Orange says that the iPhones have been refurbished.

"This iPhone has been refurbished, which means it has been restored to like-new working condition and appearance," the company says one its website.

The devices come with a one year parts and labour warranty and are shipped with free delivery.

While the Orange store sells a variety of devices at lower cost online, it is limited when it comes to Apple devices. Core Group has an exclusive distribution agreement for the California company's products in this region.

Apple on Tuesday launched its latest version of the iPhone - the 6 and 6 Plus. Though the devices will only be available on 19 September, the 16GB iPhone 6 is already being advertised on kalahari.com for R12 999.

For comparison, the site sells the cheapest iPhone 5s for R7 700, while takalot.com offers it for R9499 and the 5c for R8 499.

Online, a number of iPhones can be found on trader site Gumtree, starting out as low as R2 500 for the 4S going up to R8 500 for the 5s as of Friday.

However, it is unlikely that these sales come with any guarantees and you should ensure that items bought from traders are not stolen.
