Cell C drops free WhatsApp promotion

Cape Town - Mobile operator Cell C is ending the free WhatsApp access promotion, the operator announced.

The promotion enabled subscribers to have free access to the globally popular messaging service, but Cell C said that the promotion is being replaced with a R5 voucher.

The new bundle will enable access to the messenger for 30 days with a 1GB fair use policy.

"This is a permanent product and not a promotional offer," said CEO Jose Dos Santos.

Junior operator Cell C is on a drive to boost subscribers and the WhatsApp promotion has been a popular service offering.

"Cell C has seen such great success in our venture to embrace over-the-top players like WhatsApp, and we are pleased to now bring an incredible value proposition to our customers," said Dos Santos.
