Internet providers slash uncapped ADSL prices

Johannesburg - Internet service providers OpenWeb and MWEB have cut prices on their uncapped internet packages this week.

OpenWeb on Wednesday said its 1Mbps home uncapped ADSL is now available for R89 per month.

The company said it offers guaranteed unshaped access between midnight and 7am. This means that the service provider won’t throttle internet speeds during this period.

The company, though, said that shaping, or speed throttling, will only occur when the network is busy.

OpenWeb chief executive officer, Keoma Wright, also said in a statement that its 20Mbps connections now cost R699 per month.

Meanwhile, MWEB on Wednesday said it is now charging R79 per month for an uncapped standard 1Mbps connection.

An 8Mbps uncapped connection from MWEB is also set to cost R439 per month.

“Our new Uncapped ADSL products form part of a series of changes we are making as Telkom introduced and reintroduced new line speeds back into the market to give users more options and the opportunity to access the Internet via ADSL,” said Carolyn Holgate, general manager of product, sales and marketing at MWEB.

Last week, Telkom reportedly launched an entry-level 1Mbps ADSL product that is available at a wholesale price of less than R50 per month.

The price cut comes after Telkom announced in April this year that it planned wholesale broadband price cuts of between 10% and 63%.

“What we’re hoping that what will come out of this exercise is the ability to pass this onto the service providers,” said Telkom’s managing director of Wholesale Services, Prenesh Padayachee, in April.

In July, Telkom also cut its own DSL and fibre bundle package prices for its 'Do' product range.
