SA smartphone producer makes Nigeria play

Cape Town – Local smartphone producer AG Mobile is set to launch its devices in Africa's biggest mobile phone market Nigeria.

The company on Wednesday announced a range of devices that it will launch independent of retail partner in the African country.

Nigeria is Africa's biggest mobile phone market with almost 150 million connected active lines, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

“We’ve started by building relationships with well-respected brands such as MTN, Etisalat, Ringo and Jumia, creating employment opportunities, and supporting the networks’ objectives to advance Nigeria’s connectivity from 2G to 3G,” said chief executive Anthony Goodman.

Initially, the company will cover Lagos, Abuja, Port-Harcourt and Kano, but an online presence is an indicator that the firm has wider ambitions.

The Nigeria launch brings AG Mobile’s presence to nine African countries including Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The company will launch the devices across the price range from the dual core Zoom to the quad core Ghost flagship.

In SA, AG Mobile’s dual SIM handsets are sold through Ackermans, Dunns, Edcon, Game, House & Home, Musica, OK Furniture, PEP, Pick n Pay and Woolworths.

The company also concluded distribution agreements locally with MTN, Cell C and Telkom Mobile.
