Instead of throwing your food scraps, Green Bin SA collects them and turns it into compost. (GreenBinSA)

Food scraps from restaurants in Johannesburg are being diverted from landfills to produce compost by GreenBinSA, which has set its sights on expanding across SA as it looks to put a lid on methane emissions in a country fast running short of formal space for its garbage.

"Instead of putting your food waste into the bin, we came up with the concept of putting it into a green bin. We fetch that and then take it to compost so that it doesn't go to landfills," says Sumitra Nydoo, who founded GreenBinSA three years ago.

"The country is running out of space in landfills, and that is an absolute hazard. The waste must go somewhere. GreenBin is an environmentally friendly way to turn waste into compost," Nydoo added.
