It is too soon to tell if the avian flu outbreak detected earlier this month will lead to food insecurity, but importers want government to negotiate trade arrangements with poultry exporters to ensure continued supply.
So far four member nations of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) - Namibia, Mozambique, Botswana and Lesotho - have imposed bans on the exports of poultry products from South Africa following the outbreak of avian influenza at two commercial farms.
