Harmony Gold said on Friday an employee was killed at its Mponeng mine near Carletonville in Gauteng, with the nature of the incident still under investigation."Harmony wishes to extend its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased," CEO Peter Steenkamp said in a statement.
"The safety of our employees remains our priority. We aim to continue our efforts to ensure these tragedies do not occur," he said.
A day of mourning will be observed at the mine, while the company has closed the affected area temporarily as investigations continue.
The incident the second for the industry this week, with Gold Fields reporting at a fatality at its South Deep mine on Tuesday.
That fatality involved trackless mining equipment, with the company temporarily suspending all mining activities at the operation near Westonaria, Gauteng.
