Shares of AngloGold Ashanti, which recently moved its listing to New York from SA, lifted about 5% on Friday when it said it met its 2023 guidance and had found a sizable new deposit of gold in the US.
AngloGold, which sold off its last operational assets in South Africa in 2020, declared an inferred mineral resource of 9.1 million ounces at the Merlin deposit in Nevada. This new find takes AngloGold Ashanti's total resource in the Beatty District in Nevada to 16.6 million ounces as of the end of December.
"This is the largest new discovery in the United States in more than a decade," said CEO Alberto Calderon in a statement. "We've found a lot of gold, at a very good grade, in one of the best jurisdictions in the world. It's potentially a game changer."
