Trade union Solidarity says its members at Gold One won't return underground in January unless the mine assures their safety. This follows two protests in the past two months that saw mineworkers held hostage underground and assaulted.
The union has issued a letter demanding that Gold One respond by 27 December, saying members will be available for service but won't report for duty. Solidarity also said it would initiate civil proceedings, seeking joint liability of the employer and Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) for the physical and emotional damages endured by its members.
A wildcat strike began on 7 December, with more than 400 workers only resurfacing four days later at the mine in Springs, near Johannesburg. This was a near repeat of a three-day strike in October, after which 52 AMCU members were fired - reportedly then precipitating the December strike as other mineworkers demanded their reinstatement.
