Transnet says it is comfortable that it did not receive a bailout in this week's budget, because the R47 billion in government guarantees it got in December will be sufficient to fund it until the end of March 2025.
On Wednesday, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana said he did not believe that Transnet needed a bailout because it could do more to generate cash and fund its debt costs and operations.
Godongwana wants Transnet to "do the right thing" and cut costs, restore operations, purchase essential equipment, and engage with the private sector on future funding models.
