Vodacom announced price hikes for postpaid contract customers on Friday afternoon, set to come into effect on 1 April.

The company announced an 8% subscription increase for postpaid contract customers on RED integrated plans and 7% on RED VIP plans.

It said there would be "overall average increase" of 4.6% to the customer's total bill, assuming no change to their handset financing or value-added services.

This is slightly more than the 4.3% average postpaid contract price increase announced by MTN in December. Postpaid contact price increases on the MTN network came into effect in February.

The full breakdown of plan price changes was published in an announcement on the Vodacom website.

"2024 is moving ahead, which means it's time to review our prices to align to inflation and the inevitable increase in operational costs which impact all industries. Rest assured that we've kept this as low as possible while still providing superior quality," read the Vodacom statement.

To soften the blow for customers, Vodacom bumped up the amount of data provided on its contracts.

Vodacom also announced price increases for home internet packages, which will increase by 8% also from 1 April.

In its latest financial results statement, Vodacom announced that the company had breached the 200 million customer mark and that it had lifted its revenue by over a quarter in its third quarter, helped by its acquisition of Vodafone Egypt.

Service revenue growth in South Africa was more sedate at 1.9%.
