South Africans who have not been counted in Census 2022 can submit their household information online.

Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) has reopened the online self-enumeration process at https://getcounted.statssa.gov.za/#!/home in a bid to ensure broader participation in the population count.

The main phase of data collection for Census 2022 came to an end on 20 March, with more than 12 million households, from an estimated 17.4 million households having been counted.

The official statistics agency said data collection, particularly in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, was heavily impacted by the recent extreme weather conditions. In the Western Cape, fewer than 30% of households have been counted as part of field data collection, compared to more than 70% of households in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and the Free State have so far been counted.

Statistics SA has decided to extend further field and online collection until the end of April.

A census is held every 10 years in South Africa.

"The country's socio-economic dynamics have changed a lot since the last census was conducted in 2011. Government and business need accurate information in order to plan, and the census is the only source of population and housing data at a local level," said Project Director Calvin Molongoana.

"The more people who participate, the more accurate the data."

Estimates by Stats SA put the country's population at 59.6 million in 2020, and the government says the data is crucial for planning and provision of resources for the country.

The agency is appealing to everyone within the country's borders, irrespective of their status, to get counted. This year's population is the first ever to include digital services.
