As businesses – especially those based in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng – pick up the pieces from several days of devastating unrest and looting, they face the decision of whether to stick it out in an underperforming economy or cut their losses.

The Toyota Motor Co. was first to voice concern about its future in SA, sending a letter to the eThekwini municipality requesting an action plan from local government. It has since said it received a positive response from the city and the province in the form of a recovery roadmap.

During a meeting with business leadership on Tuesday, President Cyril Ramaphosa said now, more than ever, South Africa needed united action across the economy and society to drive investment and inclusive growth.
