Gautrain services will continue on Monday morning, despite its workers going on an indefinite strike.

The commuter rail system's workers will down their tools after reaching a deadlock with the company’s manager, Bombela Operating Company (BOC), on salary increases.

The National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa (Numsa), is demanding an 8% increase for its members at Gautrain and has rejected the 4% offer on the table. Numsa said the strike is indefinite, until the BOC engages it “meaningfully” on its demands.

However, BOC said in a statement that Numsa’s demand equates to an increase of about 26%.

The Gautrain will continue to transport passengers on Monday.

“We will implement a contingency plan to ensure we can continue to deliver a train service to our valued passengers. We have also implemented additional security measures on the Gautrain system so that your safety is not compromised,” said Gautrain in the Sunday on statement.
