For Gauteng motorists vexed by traffic on a daily basis, imagine - if you dare - a scenario where instead of crawling at an average 43km/h on the provincial road network, the pace slows to a teeth-grinding average speed of 10km. As result, a distance that currently takes you 20 to 25 minutes to traverse will instead take between one and three hours.

These are among the forecasts for a "gridlock scenario" in the province. This is not a hypothetical, but a presumed eventuality by as soon as 2030 if nothing is done to address the deteriorating state of mobility in Gauteng.
