While President Cyril Ramaphosa's economic recovery plan includes a focus on industrialisation through the manufacture of local goods, a study funded by the EU Commission highlights local content requirements could also deter new investment due to the associated costs.
During a webinar on Wednesday, hosted by the Delegation of the European Union to South Africa, the study's findings were discussed.
It looked at the impact of local content policies on EU exports and investment and is based on interviews with 14 EU businesses, nine of which are active in the renewable energy sector. An analysis of South Africa's legislation and the effectiveness of its local content policies were also conducted.
