An urgent court bid launched by the United Democratic Movement and other organisations seeks to halt load shedding of hundreds of public hospitals, as well critical sectors such as water and sanitation and food, which they warn would crumble under the weight of prolonged power cuts.
The application also seeks to prevent Eskom from implementing a 18.65% tariff hike approved by the regulator, while also holding political leaders to account for their failure to help keep the lights and compelling them to produce a plan to mitigate the power crisis.
In a supporting affidavit, energy industry veteran Ted Blom said exempting certain institutions from load shedding is technically possible.
