Renewables – specifically SA's steady supply of wind energy – made the difference between stage 6 load shedding and total collapse of the grid during Eskom's protracted wage deadlock, an energy expert says.
The embattled power utility has locked horns for weeks with employees who were on an unprotected strike at nine power stations. The strike culminated in up to 90% of workers being absent from three key power stations, and intimidation of some employees who did turn up for work.
SA has only faced Stage 6 once previously, in December 2019.
