The Cabinet wants heads to roll for the Eskom disaster. Appointing a new board is long overdue and essential, but firing CEO André de Ruyter is a high-risk endeavour, writes Carol Paton. 

Eskom CEO André de Ruyter and the company's chief operating officer Jan Oberholzer are on the chopping block. 

The overwhelming sentiment in last week's Cabinet meeting was that there must be accountability for Eskom's performance and that the top management must go. There is deep suspicion that they are not doing the planned maintenance they say they are and instead are patching up things as they break. (Eskom denies this). There is a widespread feeling that if De Ruyter were black, he would have been fired long ago.
