Long ago, when we were much younger and more impressionable, we learnt wonderful mathematical concepts - like averages, increases and numerical adjustments. And for a long time, the definitions and what they sought to represent remained universally acceptable.
If you have a range of numbers and you are trying to establish what the average of that number is, you simply find the sum of all numbers and then identify whatever denominator applies to the test. A fundamental point that was accepted by all was that whatever result is generated represents a reference point.
