Wine makes better milk

‘Put a cork in it’ just got a whole new meaning.

Australian scientists fed grape marc, a waste product of wine-making which consists of a mixture of stems, skins and seeds, to cows with surprising results.

The mixture, which is sometimes used to distil grappa or schnapps, cut methan levels by 20 per cent and gave the milk 6 times more healthy fatty acids.

This is apparently the most effective feed supplement ever tested on cows.

Cows fed with marc also produce 5 per cent more milk, with higher levels of fatty acids, than cows feed with more conventional foods.

Fatty acids offer protection against heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and cancer.
