MasterChef South Africa episode 10 was the budget meal challenge: “To cook a family meal for 4 for under R150” in 60 mins.
Abigail Donnelly, editor of Taste magazine and Eat Out was the guest judge. “I live and dream food”. She is the queen of food styling in SA and a worthy judge.
The contestants bolted to the pantry and headed for the chicken at first. With only R150 to spend they all scrambled and came out way over budget.
Pete went around with a huge calculator and the contestants had to give back ingredients to make up the R150.
Lungile was the only one who came in under R150.
An overview:All the contestants put their heads down and the 60 minutes went like a flash.
Lungile – was confident and knew exactly what to do, she went to work like a pro.
Jade - seemed very happy and went to work on an old family recipe.
Deena - looked focused and intense.
Khaya - her wheels started to fall off and she was stressing, she was trying to do too much!
The secret: Keep it SIMPLE guys.
Abigail: “I’m not seeing people tasting their food!” amid much muttering and chattering between the judges.
The food was good and bad. Family food, hey, what can we say? There were schnitzles and chicken’s legs and pastas. Not exactly top chef stuff but an interesting challenge nonetheless.
Manisha kicked ass and won the challenge with her “beautifully balanced plate of food” - Roast chicken with vegatables and a red pepper sauce.
Bomb-outs: Jade, Khaya and Sam.
The next challenge was:
Save the minestrone!A difficult challenge but Jade pulled through like a champion and skilled cook.
Sam was chucked out, she over-seasoned yet again and was the obvious choice - never mind that she added meat to her vegetable soup!
So, guys we're in the business end of the competition... it's time to vote for your favourite contestant!
