5 great coffee spots in Joburg

By: Sarah Graham 2012-07-06 10:58

Actually, there are so many options that this should probably be a list of the Top 50. But for the sake of keeping things simple, here are SOME of the top spots in Joburg to get your brew on, bru. Here’s where to get the most bang for your buck, the most java for your moolah.

Bean There, Milpark

I don’t think there’s anywhere else to start this list, than over at Bean There on Stanley Avenue in Milpark. Bicyles and other eclectic bits and bobs adorn the walls (so for all you Cape Town folks, it’s kinda like Biscuit Mill meets, well, Biscuit Mill) and up North we love it long time. These guys really take coffee seriously, but clearly have a heck of a lot of fun in the process. Organic, fair trade, single origin… the works.

Owners Sarah and Jonathan Robinson are relentless in their own brand of coffee alchemy, and it shows. Right down to being the very first certified roasters of fair trade coffee in SA. So basically, Bean There is like the Godfather of good coffee in South Africa. Nuf said. Oh, AND, they just opened a branch on Wale Street in Cape Town, so for once, we’re in the lead and you guys in the mother city can play catch up ;)

44 Stanley Avenue

Monday to Friday 07h30 till 16h00
Saturday 09h00 till 15:h0
Closed Sundays and Public Holidays

Vovo Telo, 44 Stanley & 4th Avenue Parkhurst

And just across the way from Bean There, sits our old friend Vovo Telo, with another branch on uber trendy 4th Avenue in Parkhurst. They also have the most beautiful, made-with-love artisanal breads and pastries. Vovo Telo is just an all round happy-making story, the stuff legends are made of.

44 Stanley Avenue, Milpark

Tuesday to Friday 08h00 to 15h30
Saturday 08h00 to 16h00
Sunday 08h00 to 14h00

Wolves, Illovo

“If I lived in Joburg, Wolves would be my coffice. It is an awesome little spot, with an all day breakfast, free wifi and killer coffee. Edwin, the manager, is an absolute legend and the walls are clad in small pieces of art. The couches are comfy, the cakes are to die for and the hot chocolate comes with a moustache – a chocolate one” says Robyn Campbell, Jozi coffee connoisseur of ‘I Love Coffee’ fame.

3 Corlett Drive, Illovo

Monday to Wednesday 07h30 till 19h30
Thursdays 07h30 till midnight
Fridays 07h30 till 22h00
Saturdays 09h00 till 16h00

4th Avenue Coffee Roasters, Parkhurst

This boutique coffee house could also be called The Home of Proper Coffee. Here, it’s roasted properly, brewed properly and each and every latté or cappuccino is flawlessly executed. Also, they have an oh-so cute and quirky hot pink coffee roaster, aptly dubbed ‘Legendary Pink’ and she’s one lady you have got to meet, and you can watch them roast your beans on the spot. Kiff neh? Basically, this coffee experience will leave you smiling all over your face.

Shop 3, The Cobbles
Cnr 4th Ave & 11th Street
Parkhurst

Hausbrandt, Melrose Arch

And a café for all the swanky sophistiates out there? Has to be Hausbrandt in Melrose Arch (‘before I head to my personal trainer thanks doll’). It has a very elegant, European feel, and the coffee is beautifully brewed.

Melrose Piazza, Melrose Arch

And obviously, our friends over at Vida know a thing or two about producing killer cappuccinos, and what’s not to love about their vibey, ballsy funness? And let’s not forget that you can get classy over at The Patisserie, gorgeous chandeliers and all. There’s also Tashas, Salvation Café, and a whole slew of other options. So really, we haven’t even scooped all the milk froth off our latté yet people…

So let us know in the comments below where you like to get your java fix in Jozi.
