The Kenya Wildlife Service intelligence team arrested two suspected poachers and recovered two elephant trophies on Wednesday at Ngarariga area within Nyeri County.
According to Laikipia East Senior warden Dickson Too, the two suspects were apprehended as they were searching for an immediate market for the two elephant tusks weighing 22kgs.
“I managed to send my team to the scene after a tip-off from area residents who claimed that the suspects were eyeing to find a quick profitable market for the tusks”, said the senior warden.
Mr. Too also said that the suspected poachers are aged about 30-years-old and that one claimed that he is a Nairobi resident while the other said that he hails from Karatina.
He said that the two tusks were well packed in a sachet and that they must have been taken from one elephant. “As far as the matters are concerned, we are yet to verify whether this jumbo was killed in one of Laikipia’s forests but we highly suspect that it was killed just within”, continued Mr. Too.
The senior officer noted that the issue of poaching has been in the increase in Laikipia but assured that the Wildlife Service has laid down strict measures to curb the vice.
Mr. Too is now urging Kenyans to conserve wildlife which is Kenya’s national heritage adding that the citizens should be alert and willing to report any person conducting poaching.
He however refuted concepts that human-wildlife conflict results to massive wildlife destruction.
The tusks are been held at Nanyuki Police Station as the two suspects awaits to be arraigned in court.
