A five kilogram bomb has been laying down for four days inside a homestead at Kwahuku area in Gakawa Location, Laikipia East.
Area residents have had sleepless nights since Saturday with the fear that the bomb might result to an enormous explosion.
The bomb was collected on Saturday afternoon by a 17-year-old boy at Uwanja wa mbuzi area near the Kenya Army Base, where his friends and him were grazing a herd of livestock.
According to Derrick Gatobu Kathrima a form Four student at Kerugoya Boys High School, they collected the bomb and took it to their home, thinking it was a scrap metal and that they would sell it out scrap metal dealers in Nanyuki town for a colossal sum of money.
“I took it to our house but when my dad returned home from work, he got suspicious of it and told me that it was a live bomb”, said Kathrima.
The boy’s father Paul Gatobu didn’t hesitate but alerted the Gatakwa chief who came and examined it that evening.
“The chief, Mr. David Wamae assured us that he would call upon the relevant experts to intervene and retrieve it but we are surprised yet it is four days now and no measures have been taken”, said Gatobu
Gatobu and other residents are now pointing a blaming finger at the area authorities for laxity in the situation which has now raised lots of fear amongst them.
Efforts to contact the Laikipia Air Base Commander Francis Ogolla bore no fruits as he claimed that he was in a meeting.
Gakawa residents are now saying that the country has had lots of explosion due to the dreadful bombs and that terrorist like the Al-shabaab militia might steal it if immediate response is not taken.
“We have kept our small children indoors as they can get curious and go to play with the missile”, said Kathrima’s mother, Nkirote Kathurima.
