Nakuru Mayor Mohammed Surraw has raised concern over the delay in issuing identification cards and birth certificates to Muslims in Nakuru town.
Addressing journalists during a special iftar dinner { meal taken after breaking fast during Ramadhan } at a Nakuru hotel, Surraw said that over 200 Muslims have not received their IDs despite having applied for them as early as 2007.
He said that most of them have had to meet “unrealistic” requirements set by registration officers, terming the move as a violation of their rights.
He called on the ministry of immigration officers in Nakuru to comply with a recent ministerial directive to have all those seeking identification cards attended to without requiring them to visit their mother districts.
last month , the Kenya Muslim youth alliance raised a similar complain which south Riftvalley registration co-ordinator Thomas Gekonde dismissed saying that his office had put in place stringent measures to ensure issuance of ids is done fast.
He said that registration officers had been visiting various locations and schools following a ministerial directive to establish mobile registration centers.
The officer said that no one will be discriminated in the process so long as all the necessary requirements are met.
