Over 500 students of Lambwe Secondary School in Mbita District- Homa Bay County have rejected their new Principal and her deputy.
Waving placards and carrying twigs, the students trekked over 20 kilometers to the district headquarters at Mbita Point, to express their displeasure with the new administration.
The students, whose strike has paralyzed learning activities in the institution, are against the promotion of their former deputy Margret Juma as the new school principal.
The changes, which saw Bernard Ochieng from neighboring Mbita High School appointed as deputy, were effected after former school Principal, Laban Onono was deployed as County Education Officer.
The students said that they wanted a more senior teacher to head the school instead of Ochieng whom they linked with a recent strike in his old school.
“We either have our former Principal back or a senior principal be posted,” they repeatedly sang.
They claimed the performance of the school which had deteriorated for the last eight years had started to improve under the leadership of their former head.
The students also demanded for the transfer of some of their teachers whom they claim have stayed in the school for ages.
Police from the nearby Ogongo Police Station were forced to rush to the school to calm the situation and avert any damages by the irate students.
However, no cases of destruction of property were reported during the demonstration that was largely peaceful.
Area District Education Officer, Hellen Alivitsa addressed the learners and convinced them to return to school with a promise that she will delve deeper into the matter.
