Youth and police unite for peace

Hundreds of youth and Kenya police officers participated in a peace match in Eldoret Town Uasin Gishu County singing peace songs.

This is a huge peace statement given that there has been mistrust between the youth and police officers.

In a forum dabbed ‘Urafiki  Wetu Usalama Wetu, (our friendship our peace), the youth shined the police officers shoes in a bid to reduce mistrust among the youth.

The forum was organized by Faces of Peace and to propagate non-violence among the youth.

The youth together with the police planted trees at the Eldoret Police Headquarters.

Prisilla Okewe, Faces of Peace Coordinator said the initiative is meant to bring collaboration between the youth and the police who the government agents of security.

“We plant to have such forums in every county. This will bring the aspect of respect between the youth and police.” She said

 Eldoret which is a cosmopolitan town was one of the most affected by the 2007/2008 post election violence.

The forum provide a platform for the youth to talk to the police about there security need.

They cited area in Eldoret like Langas which are high insecurity zone.  In response, Mr Muthama Eldoret OCPD promised to act on the matter urgently.

In what looked like ‘you guys have to her us out today’ youth alleged to have been asked for a bribe by junior police officer  when seeking for services like obtain a police abstract.

“We are asked to pay ksh50 for an abstract, tell us if this is right,” lamented Jonh Kemoi  a 20 year old man attending the peace forum.

In response to their grievances Mr Muthama the Ordered the young man to be given an abstract immediately.

Mr Muthama was very happy with the youth peace initiative and urged the youth to volunteer and information which the police may use to arrested cases of insecurity.

“We are now friends, you can talk to us concerning security issues in this area.’’  added Muthama.

Present at the Saturday event also was the David Muli the OCS urged the youth to shun violence. He advised them not to be used by politicians who pay them little one to the youth in order to them to cause fracas.

During entertainment time, the OCPD, Deputy OCPD, OCS and other police officers joined in song and dance with the youth, a session which brought Laughter among the attendants.
