Couples will enjoy planned porn - TopTV

accreditation

Johannesburg - TopTV CEO Eddie Mbalo says the pornography the pay channel is applying to screen will tell stories that couples can enjoy together, the Sunday Times reported.

"If you check the dictionary definition of porn, you will realise that porn is content that has no artistic merit. What we're promoting here is scripted narrative material that could be watched by couples," Mbalo told the newspaper.

This month the Independent Communications Authority of SA (Icasa) heard an application by TopTV to broadcast Playboy, Desire, and Private Spice channels between 20:00 and 05:00.

On Sunday, Mbalo said, as a husband, he did not watch porn.

"I'm not interested. I'm a married man and I don't watch porn."

Mbalo said allowing the channel to screen porn was a constitutional right.

"For me, personally, the issue is about constitutional principles."

However, the content could also earn money for the pay channel.

"There is a potential, when the business does come out of its current situation, that adult content will help in the survival of the business, It is a revenue stream."

He said at the moment, TopTV needed a"strategic equity partner".

Recently, Christian and civil society groups said they would boycott TopTV.

The pay station's initial application made provision for three 24-hour channels, but this plan was abandoned.
