  • Zahara's family released a statement updating the public that the singer has been hospitalised for a week.
  • They asked for privacy and prayers and promised updates would be made on the singer's social media.
  • Over the weekend, reports surfaced of the singer's ill health, citing 'liver complications'.

The family of the award-winning musician Zahara (real name Bulelwa Mkutukana) says they are awaiting updates from the medical team after confirming the singer has been hospitalised for a week.

They thanked those supporting them and expressed compassion for the musician.

This comes after reports over the weekend that the star was rushed to hospital due to "liver complications".

"Her liver is severely scarred, and she may need a liver transplant," a source close to the singer's family revealed to the publication Zimoja.

The source also said Zahara's family from East London came to Joburg to be by the singer's fiancé, Mpho Xaba's, side.

"They are also holding prayer vigils for her to get better, in both Joburg and East London, where she comes from".

On Monday, the family and team released a statement posted on the singer's social media platforms saying that despite their best efforts to keep the matter private, someone managed to leak the news.

"Unfortunately, even though our daughter's hospitalisation has been of strict confidentiality within our family and close friends, that hasn't stopped the spread of disingenuous information on the internet. We want to stress that any reliable information regarding Zahara's health will be communicated via her official social media platforms or by herself," read the statement.

The family has since asked for privacy and continued prayers for Zahara's speedy recovery.

"We trust that she will be back on the road soon, doing what she loves and what we all love her for, healing people through her powerful gift and love of music."

This is not the first time Zahara has been hospitalised for a liver complication. In 2019, City Press reported the singer spent a "bleak Christmas" in hospital.

Her sister, Nomonde, told the publication at the time that the doctor gave the singer a stern warning to quit alcohol, or she would die.

"December was a tough month for us, but the doctors guaranteed that if she stopped drinking, her liver might recover. We all had to come back to Joburg to give Zahara emotional and physical support," Nomonde said at the time, adding that her family was behind her 100%.

"We are making sure that there is always someone around her to monitor her so that she doesn't start drinking again," she said.
