The internet, specifically TikTok, has taken the average career span and proverbially microwaved it, turning the idea of 15 minutes of fame into 15 seconds of fame - the average time span of a short-form social media video. 

While the world was discussing how the decentralisation offered by the internet took the power to gatekeep the music industry away from record labels, distribution companies and music industry heavyweights and put it back in the hands of artists and their self-appointed teams, TikTok swooped in and flipped an evolving industry on its head. 

This came at a time when the continental sounds of Amapiano and Afrobeats were taking over the world. The entirely new genre created a clean slate for emerging talents and young musicians across Africa, and they are capitalising like never before.
