The American Broadcasting Company (ABC) has announced that 71-year-old Gerry Turner will be the first 'Golden Bachelor' on their new show. Turner is a father of two from Indiana, USA.
The Golden Bachelor is a spin-off series from ABC's The Bachelor; the show has produced The Bachelorette and Bachelor in Paradise. The Bachelor has spawned 60 seasons since 2002.
The unscripted series features more senior contestants, with an ABC statement describing them as women with "a lifetime of experience". It is also described as a show where a "hopeless romantic is given a second chance at love in the search for a partner with whom to share the sunset years of life".
ABC announced the show with their 2023-2024 fall prime-time schedule, along with a string of other shows, according to the statement.
Appearing on Good Morning America (GMA), Turner expressed his excitement about appearing on the show and said, "It's never too late to fall in love again."
Turner was previously married to Toni, whom he met in high school. They were married for 42 years and had two daughters. But in 2017, Toni fell ill and died.
"You know, she got robbed; every day that goes by, that's the thought that I have," Turner said on GMA. When asked what his wife would think of him participating in the show, he said:
His daughters insisted he try out for the show.
The Warner Bros.-produced show will be available on Hulu for streaming.
