  • SABC2 game show 'Deal or No Deal' is getting a celebrity spin-off, with musician and reality TV star kicking off the first episode.
  • The show will air on Saturdays and feature TV and radio presenters, socialites, comedians, sports stars, and social media influencers.
  • The episodes will switch to the original 'Deal or No Deal' format, where models hold silver briefcases and open them to reveal different amounts of money.

UPDATE:

Musician and reality TV star Vusi Nova will kick off the SABC's spin-off celebrity version of weeknight gameshow Deal or No Deal SA when it premieres on Saturday, 9 March at 18:00 on SABC 2. Nova will be the first of 52 local A-listers who will put their hearts on the line to raise funds for charities of their choice over the next year.

However, the spin-off will not feature the red boxes viewers are familiar with in the original format. Instead, Nova, along with the coming stars, including TV and radio presenters, socialites, comedians, and other movers and shakers, will bargain on what was inside the shiny silver suitcases held by 20 money models, seen in the US format.

But, in an exciting twist, there will be 10 handsome models who will leave viewers swooning.

At the start of the Deal or No Deal Celebrity episodes, the big-name star in the hot seat will ask one of these money models to hand over their briefcase, which will then be the one that will earn the celebrity cash for the charity they are playing for. From there, the celebrity will ask the other money models to open their briefcases one by one in different rounds. After each round, the show's host, Katlego Maboe, then receives a call from the mysterious banker offering the celebrity a certain amount of cash for their briefcase. If they accept the deal, the game is over. If not, they continue to play until they either accept an offer or are left with the money inside the briefcase they initially selected.

Primedia Studios, with Homebrew Films and SABC2, are adding a Deal or No Deal Celebrity spin-off season.

Host Katlego Maboe will do a Saturday celebrity version featuring actors, TV and radio presenters, socialites, comedians, sports stars, social media influencers, and other movers and shakers.

The episodes will look like the special charity episodes of the first season of Deal or No Deal on SABC1, except that the format will switch to the original Deal or No Deal format where models hold silver briefcases and open them to reveal different amounts of money.

Deal or No Deal SA will now run on weekdays on SABC2 at 18:30 in the timeslot where the Afrikaans TV news bulletin used to be, with Deal or No Deal Celebrity airing on SABC2 on Saturdays at 18:00, also in the former Afrikaans TV news timeslot.

Deal or No Deal Celebrity will start on SABC2 on Saturday 9 March, with the celebrity contestants who could win between R1 and R250 000. Winnings will be donated to various worthy causes.

After picking a briefcase, models will open it to reveal the money contestants won't get, hoping to keep the bigger amounts for last.

The celebrity season will also look different, with a sleek new set design in a different colour palette from the weekday show on SABC2.

"The SABC's exciting new Deal or No Deal Celebrity spin-off highlights the public broadcaster's mission to provide world-class entertainment that is positive, aspirational and impactful," says Lala Tuku, the SABC's acting group executive for its video entertainment division.

Tuku added:

We are committed to using the power of television for the greater good of our society. The first season of Deal or No Deal South Africa transformed the lives of more than 250 individuals, with over R5 million won.

"Now, we're taking it one step further. Deal or No Deal Celebrity, spawned by a couple of top-rated special season 1 episodes featuring big-hearted celebs playing for charity, will make a substantial difference in many underprivileged communities."

Deal or No Deal Celebrity, like the latest season of Deal or No Deal, is also produced in Cape Town by Homebrew Films, and filmed at Atlantic Studios in Milnerton.
