She's been a Hollywood actor and making her presence felt at international fashion shows; now, Thuso Mbedu is showing the world a hidden talent by co-writing a comic titled Niobe: She-Tribe.
She-Tribe is an addition to the Tales of Asunda series by Stranger Comics' Sebastian A. Jones.
Sharing the news on Instagram, Mbedu recently wrote, "I'm so excited."
''Never in my life did I ever imagine that I'd do something as cool as co-writing a comic. It's something I would've wanted to do but never actually thought I could do because how, sway? So I'm very happy to announce that the latest episode of Niobe that I had the privilege of co-writing with @strangercomics @sebastian.a.jones is finally live for presale now!
Jones has gifted his audiences with Tales of Asunda for over three decades.
"When we started brainstorming for the She-Tribe comic, Thuso breathed new life into Niobe and the vulnerable character relationships with such thought and care. Thuso is a rare spirit who speaks of many lives lived, here and before, and I couldn't be more excited to share with our fans what we've got in store for Niobe and Asunda," Jones said in an exclusive statement provided to io9.
Mbedu's work on the comic book series comes after Jones' 2015 collaboration with actor Amandla Stenberg. The pair created Niobe: She Is Life, a series of graphic novels that merge fantasy and exploration of modern issues like racism and religion.
According to Vogue, it was the first internationally distributed comic with a black female author, artist, and central character. This rare combination of firsts struck a chord with readers who lauded the comic and its follow-ups, and this paved the way for Mbedu's collaboration with Jones.
Mbedu recently joined the cast of an upcoming HBO series featuring Mark Ruffalo, Tom Pelphrey and Emilia James. The crime drama series, under the name Untitled Brad Ingelsby Task Force Project, is in pre-production.
